Animals Left Behind

Our animals are aware of our thoughts, and what is going on with us and the other animals that live with them. They are like energy sponges, and they take everything in. They are also very intuitive. Sunshine was quite aware of what was happening with Bo, and it was extremely difficult for him. Approximately an hour before the vet was coming to our home Sunshine went off to hide in another room. He was very depressed, and there was no comforting him. Sometimes we do not  realize the deep connection that animals have with each other until one of them transitions.

As of this writing it has been well over several years since Bo transitioned. I did a number of things to help Sunshine, but it took a long time for him to bounce back. I too still miss him. My great comforts are the occasional messages I receive from him, his guidance, and the intense love I feel when he has laid next to me in his energy body. Bo’s messages come out of the blue, and although he was a fellow of few words he has shared a number of beautiful thoughts with me. He told me that he was the one who guided me to some much needed healing work that I did. He continues to act as one of my guides, and he is often present with my spiritual team when I connect with animals, sometimes assisting with this process.

Many years ago I had a pair of cockatiels, a male and female. They would preen each other and eventually started mating, even though the eggs never hatched. One morning I found Baille behind my bed in the morning. She had crossed over during the night, and I found out later that this was not uncommon for birds. It was a devastating shock for her partner, Murphy Brown, and for me. He was grief-stricken. Actually we were both heavy with grief.

Later in the day two of my girlfriends came over. We held a beautiful memorial service, and Baille was buried in the back yard. What happened next was amazing to witness. My two cats sat and held space, one on either side of where she had been buried. They stayed there for hours, and I felt they were honoring her passing. I share this story because our animals’ awareness, and the various ways they respond, is truly remarkable.

Murphy Brown was inconsolable with the loss of Baille. When I asked him what he needed he told me he wanted a partner that looked just like Baille. If you are familiar with cockatiels you may know that there are different types of coloring, due to the breeding process. Murphy was the standard grey with orange cheeks. Baille was a Lutino, a beautiful pale yellow with orange cheeks.

I went on a mission to find Murphy a mate. I would place him in a small traveling carrier and off to the bird stores we would go. I will admit this elicited some humor from a few of my girlfriends. They basically said, “I wish someone would go looking for a mate for me!” I knew that if we could place both birds on the same perch I would immediately know if it would work. What I soon discovered was that all the Lutino cockatiels they would bring out were young babies. Murphy would walk over and peck at them, letting me know his displeasure.

One day I received a call from a local bird store. They told me they believed they had exactly what I was looking for. Someone had turned in, referred to as surrendered, a pair of Lutino breeder birds. This was exciting news, for it meant we had a female and that she was old enough to mate. Murphy and I took off to the store. We did the perch test, and I knew it would work. I named her Hallie Ariel and she is still with me at the time of this writing. She was not tame, and certainly not use to being handled by humans, so it was a slow process for her to adapt to life with us. They became a beautiful pair together.

I do not see the animal. I see a living being.
I see a friend. I feel a soul.
